hamantaschenPurim is the Jewish holiday where we remember how God used Esther to save the Jewish people from almost certain death at the hand of Haman.  You can read the story in the book of Esther.

Every Jewish celebration must involve food, and Purim is no exception!  We enjoyed making hamantaschen,  three-sided cookies filled with fruit or chocolate to remind us of Haman, the villain of Purim (who supposedly wore a three-sided hat).

While the hamantaschen was baking we acted out the story.  Shana of course was Esther, while Kenan gladly volunteered for the part of Haman, the meanest character.  During Helen’s narration, any time the name Haman came up we all had to boo and Kenan would gleefully bang his sword against his shield as loud as he could.

Here’s Queen Esther decorating her crown:

And Haman looking every bit a villain:

Nate as Mordecai in a bathrobe and a Kippah and Helen as Queen Vashti will be left to your imaginations.
